Kiwi Encounter, Rotorua

October 12, 2017

Ever wanted to see a Kiwi close up? The team at Kiwi Encounter is doing a fantastic job preventing these unique, flightless birds from extinction. Join us on an exclusive ‘behind the scenes’ tour and learn how the experts at Kiwi Encounter work through the different phases of the birth of a kiwi chick. Kiwi’s don’t survive in the wild due to predators. The incubated eggs in the wild are being lifted from the burrows and brought to the Kiwi Encounter team to complete incubation artificially. The hatching takes between 3 to 4 days and the baby kiwis are then carefully monitored and given a special diet until the chicks reach around 1kg in weight. They are then returned to the wild under carefully monitoring of the Department of Conservation. Kiwi Encounter is now the largest and most successful kiwi hatching facility in the world. Since the opening of the center in 2004, over 1500 kiwi chicks have hatched here. Contact us today for more information and book your exclusive ‘behind the scenes’ tour.
