HIKING TOURS

With thousands of kilometers of tracks, walking options are available to suit all levels of fitness and experience. Try one of our recommended day walks for a few hours or plan a multi-day hike on one of 8 ‘Great Walks’ of New Zealand. Two of our favorites are the Tongariro Northern Circuit, encircling Mt. Ngauruhoe, an active volcano in Tongariro National Park and the often underrated Heaphy Track on South Island’s West Coast, an ancient Maori trail. We recommend to organize both day- and multiple day hikes to be fully guided, either in small groups or completely private.

Routeburn Track Exclusive Walk

May 31, 2019

Linking Mount Aspiring National Park with Fiordland National Park, the Routeburn – while lesser-known than the Milford – features some of the grandest scenery. Huge, glacier-carved valleys, snowy mountains, waterfalls and jewel-like lakes dot the length of the Routeburn. One of the great things about the Routeburn is that its location lends itself to an unforgettable day hike for those who prefer not to hike the full length. Key Summit is home to arguably the best views on the track. Journeying from Te Anau to The Divide, then hiking the Routeburn Track to Key Summit & back before heading back to Te Anau is a day you won’t forget in a hurry

Tongariro Alpine Crossing, Tongariro

January 23, 2017

We consider the Tongariro Alpine Crossing one of the best, most exciting day hikes in New Zealand due to its outstanding volcanic landscapes and awe-inspiring natural scenery in New Zealand’s oldest National Park. To many visitors, the park is also well known as the home of Mordor, Emyn, Muil and Mount Doom from the “Lord of the Ring” trilogy. On your trek, you come close to an active crater, steam vents, emerald-colored lakes and magnificent panoramas – on clear days you can see as far as Mount Taranaki. The trek takes seven to eight hours and is a one-way route.

Heaphy Track hike 6 days, Motueka

January 22, 2017

This delightful hiking route passed through the heart of Kahurangi National Park. This ancient Maori trail is now one of New Zealand's "Great Walks" and is a well-formed track stretching 82 kilometres from Golden Bay to the West Coast. Climbing up through ancient beech forests, you break out into expansive tussock lands. With its gorgeous red tussocks, limestone cliffs, caves and twisted forest you could be in a Hobbit film. On the descent to the coast you pass giant gnarled rata trees, broad rivers (via bridges) and finally arrive at the wild nikau palm-fringed beaches of the West Coast. Maori Trails will book simple but comfortable huts or similar accommodation at the end of each day and offer a real "kiwi tramping experience".
